Overview
The L Visa (Tourist Visa) is for foreign nationals visiting China for tourism purposes who don’t qualify for visa-free entry. It’s the traditional option for travelers from countries without visa-free arrangements.
:::tip Check visa-free eligibility first! If you’re from one of the 50 countries eligible for 30-day visa-free entry, you likely don’t need an L Visa. :::
When to Apply for L Visa
Apply if you:
- Are from a country not eligible for visa-free entry
- Need to stay longer than visa-free allows (30+ days)
- Plan to visit for purposes beyond tourism (business meetings with compensation)
- Need multiple entries to China
- Want longer validity than visa-free permits
Visa Duration
| Type | Duration | Entries | Extensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Entry | 30-60 days | 1 | Generally not extendable |
| Double Entry | 30-60 days each | 2 | Generally not extendable |
| Multiple Entry | 1-10 years (30-180 days per stay) | Unlimited | Not extendable |
:::info Multiple-entry visas are typically issued to frequent travelers with good travel history to China. The duration per stay is determined by the consulate. :::
